(06/19/1982) Paul Orndorff NC Buzz Sawyer. Sawyer was the National Champion, but it didn’t appear that the title was on the line here. Everything Paul Orndorff did looked good, even the little things like a hammerlock. I always loved that about Orndorff. Buzz doesn’t get enough credit for being a great bumper and seller while maintaining his maniac persona. Orndorff even used a FLYING headscissors, which was something you didn’t see him pull out on the national stage too often later in his career. Buzz worked over the back after an incredible powerslam, and Orndorff sold it the rest of the way, even through his comeback. Man, I miss little things like that. By the time Orndorff did make his comeback, the studio was going FUCKING NUTS. Time expired as Orndorff was beating the shit out of Sawyer against the ropes at 6:24, but this was fun stuff and a great way to build a title match at the arenas. You can argue it was a little slow initially, but it built very well, even in six minutes. So much so that the crowd didn’t even care about the non-finish. **3/4
