The Context

Here we have Jim Ross watching the Horsemen turn on Sting at Clash X and reacting to it. Jim put over the angle and the performers as he watched it, but the more interesting part of this clip is the discussion of Sting’s injury and the search for a replacement. One name he mentioned as someone he pitched to step into a babyface role because he thought he worked like a babyface was Great Muta. Jim also said Rick Steiner was considered for the position. Ross went into a sidebar about Lex still not being ready and said he didn’t think he would be for another year.

Analysis

There are a few things to unpack here.

Ross doesn’t get into the reasons why the Muta babyface turn didn’t happen, but that’s both him and Cornette saying they were advocates for it during this run. Flair was still the head of the booking committee until right before Wrestle War, but it’s also possible Jim Herd wasn’t big on the idea.

The Luger comments were the most interesting. Ross was helping book and format TV for a good bulk of his entire WCW run, so we know one guy that for sure wasn’t big on Lex. For the record, I disagree and think they should have put the title on Lex in either 1988 or briefly here in 1990, but that’s another story.
