WCW Cruiserweight Tag Team Title Tournament: Elix Skipper & Kid Romeo def. AJ Styles & Air Paris in 5:31

With us listening to AJ talk about his time in WCW yesterday, this match seemed appropriate. I forgot Romeo was a mystery partner of Elix Skipper, who cut a very solid promo introducing his partner. I’m not sure why they built up Romeo, a guy primarily known as a regular on the defunct WCW Saturday night, but here we are. I always enjoyed Air Paris in Wildside, but the gear, look, and so many highspots in a five-minute match made him come across as especially indie here. It didn’t help when he tried a dive through the second and third ropes and briefly got caught. AJ looked more solid than everyone else in the match, but they also did quite a bit in five minutes for 2001, and not everything looked good or crisp for the era, even if it was an exciting match. The finish came when Elix gave Paris a shitty dropkick from the apron inside the ring, and Romeo followed with a sick Michinoku driver. There were too many mistakes to call this well-worked, but they also played to the new tag division by doing so many big aerial moves, and some of them were awesome for the era. **
