The Context

Since we just watched Bret matches, here we have Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart discussing the football battle royal at Wrestlemania 2 and Andre the Giant. Bret says he was originally scheduled to face Ricky Steamboat, but the company changed the match about a month before the show and put the Hart Foundation in the NFL battle royal. Bret said one of the reasons he and Steamboat had such a good match at the Boston Garden was to show the company what they missed. Bret wondered how his career would have changed if he had been given that match instead at a showcase event. Bret also discussed being the one who came up with the finish for the battle royal (and Andre liking it), and, surprisingly, also discussed how he thought Refrigerator Perry would have worked in the wrestling business if he had stuck with it.

Analysis

I liked the Steamboat vs. Hercules match at Mania 2, but the Hitman match would have been next-level and had the potential to be not only the best match on the show, but also the most memorable. Bret doesn’t really get a Mania moment to help him stand out until Bad News turned on him after the battle royal at Wrestlemania IV. It should also be noted that, much like their wrestling tag team, Jim Neidhart let Bret do the working in this shoot interview, saying almost nothing, with only an occasional chuckle. At least he looked good in the shades.
