The Context
Here we have Jim Ross on his podcast talking about Terry Funk’s no-show at Survivor Series ‘93, which we just reviewed. JR confirmed that Terry left the night before, claiming his horse was sick, which Jim laughed at outright. Conrad Thompson read from Terry’s book, where Terry claimed he was going to take Pat Patterson’s position on the booking committee. Terry also said he was supposed to submit to Bret’s sharpshooter, be unmasked, then submit to the Hitman’s finisher again. JR seemed to remember most of the match plans, although he didn’t mention submitting twice. Ross and Conrad were both skeptical that Terry had been offered the Patterson position, and both thought it might have been a conversation with Vince about where it could eventually lead.
Analysis
I’m equally as skeptical as JR and Conrad that Funk would be filling Vince’s right-hand role. Bill Watts was offered something similar in name a couple of years later, so it is possible, but overall, it seems very unlikely. I also lean towards not believing that Funk being submitted twice was the plan. It just seems like an unnecessary burial. Funk being unmasked has always been out there, so that tracks. Funk’s no-showing also killed the finish fo that Harris match with the awful Shawn walking out finish. I guess that it probably would have happened before the Funk submission and unmasking.
