2 Cold Scorpio & Superstar Steve def. KENTA & Naomichi Marufuji
Here we have THE GREAT 2 Cold Scorpio teaming with former Harley Race trainee, Superstar Steve, against the budding tag team of Kenta & Marufuji, who were one of the early internet darling tag teams in history. Scorpio and Marufuji had some great mat wrestling exchanges throughout, and may have worked together more than any other combination in the match. Scorp was also good at working in power moves with the smaller guys in this era because he was already sketchy as a cruiserweight, but he looked like a man among boys in this match. Steve looked solid, but unspectacular, which is very much how I remember him from this era. He did a flying headbutt as a tribute to Harley, which I enjoyed. They did your classic Japanese jr. heavyweight style with the build to bigger moves and nearfalls after the groundwork, which was also very good. Scorpio and Steve hit a combo on KENTA with Scorpio’s splash off the top, followed by a Steve moonsault that got a great nearfall reaction. Scorpio eventually finished off KENTA with the 450. The match built very well, and really was something by the end. ***3/4
