(01/19/1985) NWA World Title Match: Ric Flair (champion) v. Terry Gordy: Since I just reviewed a Gordy match where he challenged Rick Martel for the AWA title, I thought this would be a fun contrast. Billy Jack Haynes was going to challenge the winner to a title match, so he came out and brought out Sunshine with him. Flair couldn’t help but get on the mic and proposition her, and she actually agreed to let him kiss her; then, of course, she slapped the shit out of him like a daytime soap opera actress. Flair sold it great, and the crowd ate it all up. This was Gordy as a babyface, so the fans are into him here. Honestly, these are two of my top ten favorites (not the best) ever, but this was underwhelming. Flair didn’t really work this the way he would in later feuds with bigger men like Nikita and Luger, so at least there’s that if you don’t like some of his more patterned work, but it didn’t really tell much of a story about either guy being in serious jeopardy. They just sort of did stuff. Then, they did this awful finish where both men had their shoulders down, and Flair supposedly got his shoulder up, but he had his foot on the ropes, and I’m not sure he got his shoulder up at all. I think the ref fucked this up. The match went 11:05 and was **1/4. I can’t believe THIS match was meh. Man, it’s so weird seeing two average Gordy matches against the likes of Martel and Flair, both in 1985 as well.
