04/27/1996 WWF Superstars: Shawn Michaels def. 1-2-3 Kid in 7:33. There are a lot of tidbits in this one to offer some context. First, Shawn Michaels was the WWF champion, but this is a non-title match. Second, Superstars was the B show at this point. Third, this was the same weekend as Shawn vs. Diesel at In Your House, to make it a little easier to forget. This was taped earlier in April, but Kid was having a ton of health and personal issues at the time and would be outright released to join Hall and Nash in WCW a couple of months later. In fact, DiBiase was his manager, and they would end up as the fourth and sixth men in the NWO just four months later. I’m not sure if it was because Waltman was a friend, or because of where both men were slotted, or because Shawn was wrestling someone that wasn’t ten times bigger than him for a child, but there was a point in this match where Shawn was ragdolling Kid like an actual child. He pressed him to the floor from the ring and gave Kid this crazy hip toss on the floor later in the match to spike the ball, so to speak. Shawn even broke out the rarely-used (by Shawn) piledriver on Kid. All of this worked from a psychology standpoint because Shawn was in a feud with the much bigger and stronger Diesel, so he needed to prove he could beat a little ass. Obviously Shawn won with a superkick. I wish they had a more competitive match, but Waltman bumped and sold his ass off for his buddy, making this highly entertaining for what it was. ***1/4
