The Context
Here, Paul Roma explains why he left WCW. First, he talked about having a deal with Ric Flair (who was the booker) to put Alex Wright over on house shows, but not wanting to do it on PPV, and Flair agreed. When Rob Feinstein asked why he didn’t want to put Wright over on PPV, Roma responded, “Because he was a fucking jabroni” in an absolutely hilarious moment.
Flair then told Roma that he would lose to Wright at Superbrawl, so he thought, “Okay, motherfucker.” Roma went out and purposely humiliated Alex by not letting him kick out of his flying elbow and instead picking up Wright. He also mocked his dancing and a bunch of other stuff to bury the youngster in front of the live crowd, and Roma was cheered during the match.
He said Flair called him and told him the match was bad, and Roma responded that everyone had told him it was great. He says he was FedExed his release papers shortly after. He then went on to talk about selling out an arena in Germany for Otto Wanz a couple of times, winning their title, and quitting the business.
Analysis
The firing was abrupt and happened shortly after the Superbrawl match. Also, Flair really didn’t like Paul Roma, so that part of the story seems legit. We don’t have attendance figures for the CWA shows in Germany, but I’m skeptical they never sold out the building, but Paul fucking Roma drew a “standing room only” crowd. He did, however, hold a short CWA title reign, during which he dropped the strap to Fit Finlay.
I would also add that if the prosecution used this video as evidence when he was a substitute teacher and punched a kid for saying wrestling is fake, it would have taken the jury about five minutes to bring him in guilty. He’s a heel all the way in this video.
