The Context
Here we have Allen Coage (Bad News Brown) discussing a physical altercation with – of all people – Owen Hart.
Bad News talked about Owen’s first run in the WWF as the Blue Blazer when they were working together. Bad News says he was working with Hogan, but because Hogan only worked three nights a week, Bad News was working with Owen in between. He said there was a night when he beat Owen with the ghetto blaster, and Owen stood on the second rope after the match, not selling the move and raising his arms to the crowd.
All of this spilled over to a couple of dates in Canada. First, they worked together in Calgary, both men’s hometown. Bad News says Owen and his family complained about doing the job because everyone in Calgary knew he was the Blazer. Bad News let it go and was happy to be home, so they did a DQ finish. He says the next night in Edmonton, he was planned to beat Owen, so he told Earl Hebner that if Owen jumped on the ropes that night, he was going to “kick the crap out of him.”
Fast forward to the match, and Bad News won and went to the back. He hid where Owen didn’t know he was, and sure enough, Owen jumped on the middle rope and raised his arms. Bad News said when Owen came backstage, Bad News punched him and started kicking him until Earl Hebner broke it up.
Analysis
There is a slight timeline issue here to note, as this would have been in April 1989. Bad News wasn’t working with Hogan anymore and was working in the midcard, partly with the Blue Blazer.
Other than that, his recollection seems pretty spot on. The Blue Blazer defeated Bad News Brown by DQ on May 27, 1988 in Calgary. The following night, they were in Edmonton, and Bad News won. Given the state of some wrestlers’ memories, that’s pretty good recall on Bad News’ part.
Whether it happened or not, who knows? But Bad News wasn’t burying Owen per se. Quite the opposite, in fact. Bad News said that Owen eventually figured the business was only entertainment and not to be taken too seriously. He said he ultimately turned into a “decent human being.” The irony here, of course, is that Bad News beat the shit out of some guy for not selling his finish while also saying that same person took the business too seriously at the time.
Ah, wrestlers!
