01/26/1991 WCW Worldwide: Arn Anderson def. Bobby Eaton in 10:33. These two were duking it out to see who would challenge the Zeeeeeee-Man for the TV title, despite Arn already regaining the title a few weeks before this at a TV taping that had yet to air. This match was heel vs. heel, which usually spells a dead crowd, but the guys did a great job of keeping the crowd engaged. Bobby probably worked the most like a babyface, but he was still cheating and doing it in a way that wasn’t meant to elicit a positive response. Bobby kind of slowly worked the arm early, which also played into the match’s psychology, with Arn selling it most of the way. I should probably mention that Barry Windham, who was a bridge booker between Ole and Dusty at this time, was doing commentary. He was rooting for Arn as a fellow Horseman, but he was also good here in general, getting the match over. The fans were strongly into Bobby’s comeback at the end of the match, popping huge for the Alabama Jam, but Bobby didn’t get the win, instead going for a piledriver after. Both were basically in a race to cheat and use the ropes at the end, but Arn one-upped Eaton as a dirty wrestler by using that as a distraction to roll him up and HOLD THE TIGHTS. Dude, I fucking love that. That’s such a perfect little detail at the end because of the heel vs. heel dynamic. Both men deserve credit for making this work as well as they did. Heel vs. heel has a very high failure rate, and these two were far from that in this one. I think I liked this more than the match they had at the first Superbrawl later in the year. ***1/4
