NWA World Title Match: Ron Killings def. Ken Shamrock (C) in 9:20. I certainly can’t remember the timeline of early NWA TNA, but I know Killings started as a heel and got some megaheat, but also showed personality, which was a lot more than could be said for Shamrock. As a result, the crowd was cheering on Truth, and there were some “Shamrock sucks” chants from the Nashville faithful. In an unintentionally hilarious spot, Shamrock faced Killings, let out a huge roar, then badly botched a huracanrana. Also, it’s one thing when pro wrestlers in this era did spots that defied logic based on what we knew about fighting, but Shamrock had a perfectly straight cross armbreaker that would have earned a tap in about a second in MMA; however, Shamrock just worked it as if he had a headlock or something. Then, he threw some heel kicks to Killings while he had it on, which looked awful. There was a big melee with James Mitchell and all of his guys, Shamrock, Killings, and Apollo on the floor. Apollo went to kick Killings on the outside and was supposed to miss and hit Shamrock, but they badly fucked that up, and Shamrock sold it anyway. Killings took advantage and won a sloppy match with a cutter. Everything about this match was disappointing, down to the crowd heat. I didn’t think these two clicked at all, and this was a big miss for crowning a new world champion. This felt like nothing big happened at all, but perhaps because we’re only eight shows in and they were already changing the title. *
