AWA 04/24/1985: Hacksaw Butch Resd vs. Tom Zenk: Zenk was still a pup, only working for about a year by this point in his career, and here you have Verne surprisingly featuring a black wrestler in Butch Reed. Reed was a perfect matchup for Zenk because Butch could always sell something simple, like a wristlick by screaming and carrying on, which made things simple for Zenk. Zenk took a couple of wild throws from the ring to the bare Winnipeg floor, including on a false comeback attempt where Reed immediately cut him off. Butch did all the old school heel shit like grabbing the tights and putting his feet on the ropes to draw the fans’ ire. Reed eventually won a pretty straightforward match with a shoulder block in 10:30. Hacksaw took a vast majority of the match, but also did a good job calling a match to keep the crowd engaged, despite its one-sided nature. Strong territory heel work from Reed and Zenk showed more potential than he probably achieved. **1/2
