01/14/1985 World Class

Americas Tag Team Title Match in two out of three falls: Midnight Express (champions with Jim Cornette) def. Terry Taylor & Brad Armstrong in 22:54:
The stips hurt this match. The 2/3 falls didn’t work in execution or with the crowd. You can see that the guys in it are good, but this was too long and didn’t have much flow. Condrey pinned Brad with a clothesline after Cornette hit him with the racket in 13:22. Brad had just gotten the hot tag when they did the finish, immediately cutting off the best crowd response of the match. Cornette and Eaton tried to keep the crowd engaged, but you can tell that Brad and Taylor weren’t very over here, given we’re talking about 1985 World Class babyfaces. It should be nothing but blowjobs and narcotics at your fingertips. Armstrong pinned Eaton at 19:44 with a powerslam. They did this weird thing after, where the babyfaces were wearing down Eaton with BEARHUGS, trying to work over the injured back from the powerslam in the rubber fall. WTF? That’s how heels get heat on a babyface. Eaton was fighting valiantly to make a tag, too. I get the psychology of working the back, but not like this. Condrey eventually tagged in, and the Midnights won quickly with what would later be named the double goozle on Taylor at 22:54. This match was so damn frustrating. There’s tremendous talent there, but this didn’t click at all. *1/2
